Hello! Who am I?

Hi there!  I'm Katie. 

 

Welcome to my blog!  I thought long and hard about how to get started.  What to say.  What content to focus on.  But let's start simple.  Who am I?  What am I talking about?  And why should you be here? 

 

First things first... I'm a Certified Holistic Health Coach, a Certified Life Coach, and a Certified Transformational Coach.  I'm also currently enrolled in a mastery level coaching certification program. 


I’m a proud Canadian currently living in Australia.  I'm named after a boat.  I lived in the same house until I was 18 years old. I love animals.  I'm a yogi and vegan.  And being in nature is my happy place.

 

I became a Veterinary Technician straight out of high school and worked in the field for most of my 20’s.  This included a stint at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for over 6 years.  It was one of the hardest jobs I've ever had, but also the coolest.


When I was 26 I bought a plane ticket to Australia and traveled solo around Oz and New Zealand for 3 1/2 months. I fell madly in love with the place, moved to Australia shortly thereafter, and am now working on getting my Australian permanent residency.


So how did I get into coaching? My journey began with Health Coaching. Health wasn’t always a thing I put a lot of thought into.  I always ate kind of okay and was fairly active. Essentially I just figured I was good enough.  Then at 20 years old my Mom passed away.  This was a huge catalyst for me and changed everything about my life.  It made me aware of my health and my mortality.  She was young and passed away from complications of lifelong obesity and yo-yo dieting.  I was determined to write my own story and not follow in the unhealthy footsteps that had been modeled to me.  But I had absolutely no idea how.


I started my journey of eating better, practicing yoga, being more active, and opened my mind to different ways of doing things.  Through my early 20's I lost about 20 kg/44 lbs through restriction and following diet culture, but through it all I hated my body.  For years I cried myself to sleep feeling I was ugly, would always be unwanted, and I thought any partner I did have would be settling for second best being with me.  I had an awful body image, no confidence, and I was quiet and shy.  I did my best to be invisible in the world.


It was in setting off on that solo trip at 26 years old that changed me.  Being by myself on the other side of the planet and completely in charge of myself and all decisions. It was incredibly empowering and showed me what I am capable of.  I slowly began looking at myself differently and in turn looking at my body differently.  And I started becoming aware of what I was saying to and about myself and my body. And how I was taking care of my body and why I was doing certain things.  The process had begun.

 

Then a couple of years ago in 2016 I got quite sick. I was admitted to hospital for about 6 weeks with a high fever and abdominal pain.  I had liver masses but nobody knew why.  I was told it could be liver cancer, an autoimmune disease, or any number of other issues.  I was eventually diagnosed with rare liver parasite.  Luckily the parasite itself was easy to treat, but it was found just in time as we had started discussing surgery to remove part of my liver for the fear it could be a cancerous tumor.  

 

Even now in 2018 I still have liver abscesses. They are shrinking but it will be years before I'm free of this. Also I still sometimes have pain almost 2 years out.  For the rest of my life I’ll have severe scarring of my liver, so I will always be at advanced risk of things like liver cancer and cirrhosis. 

 

So when this all happened in 2016 I got out of the hospital and thought what next?  I knew I needed a career change anyways.  I’d been working with animals but I wanted to work with people.  With all of my challenges, health was at the forefront of my mind, and that's when I discovered Health Coaching.  I realized that there are people in this world whose job it is to help others make changes.  To be a cheerleader, provide guidance, provide support, and help them achieve their goals.  No diets, deprivation, or negativity.  When I realized this was an option it was an obvious choice!  I had found my natural fit.

 

Shortly thereafter I began my coaching studies and have narrowed down my focus to two areas I absolutely LOVE and am super passionate about.


1.    Helping women learn to LOVE their bodies just as they are. 

 

This is such a passion of mine because it’s my story too.  As I said earlier, in my early 20's I used to cry myself to sleep and hated how I looked.  I thought anyone with me was settling for second best and I would never be really wanted or loved because of what I looked like.  Now in my 30’s I can look back on my journey with gratitude and can say I truly honestly love myself and my body.  It was been a long and hard path, and though I'm not perfect I can look back and see where I've been.  And it has become my purpose to help others down that same path.  I want women to fall in love with their bodies we are all perfect. There is only one of you and you are perfect just as you are! You’re not supposed to be anyone else. In falling in love with themselves I want to help people fall in love with taking care of themselves.  This will look different to everybody, but in general will include looking at things like your stress management, sleep, food intake, moving your body, etc. 

 

2.    Helping people transition to a more plant-based way of eating to support their physical health.  

 

I’m vegan myself though I grew up in a meat and cheese loving family.   This ties in with body image beautifully as becoming vegan is a gift I give to myself everyday. When I don’t eat animal products I feel the best. All of the challenges and pain I still sometimes feel with my liver all feel better when I eat whole plant based foods.  I have more energy, clearer skin, better sleep, and feel more alive!  So for me being vegan is the ultimate gift for myself.  Because I love myself so I want to do everything I can for myself.

 

To some people those two things look very different, but for me they go hand in hand.  They marry each other beautifully.  

 

That’s me, where I came from, and how I got where I am today.

 

My goal is to help each and every one of you with these challenges.  I am in a unique position having been where you are, to help guide you down this path and help you discover your own way. 

 

These are issues that so many people have.  Learning to love what you see in the mirror. Whether you’re a man or woman.  Looking at your Body, your weight, the lines on your face, whatever it is.  We’re all human and we all have this thing in common.  We’re always told by society we’re not good enough, but that's a lie.  We are good enough.  I will help you see that!

Please check out my website.  I run regular beginner reset cleanses, clean eating challenges, and body love programs.  I'm in the process of creating an ebook to help the transition to plant based eating be smoother by including recipes, shopping lists, and options for if you're not quite ready to cut out all meat and dairy just yet.  And my primary focus is to work one on one with people.  We are all individuals and we all have our own challenges, setbacks, and goals.  The best way for me to help you down this path is to work one on one.  I work primarily in a container of a 90 day program, meaning one session a week for 12 weeks.  This is where we focus on you, find out what you really want and go step by step to get you there.

 

Coaching is such an incredible gift to give to yourself.  It is you saying yes to yourself.  That you’re worthy of the time, of the effort, of the change. You are worth it and it’s my goal to help you see that!
