Are you bloated or tired? Is your digestion not what you'd like it to be (hello constipation!) or maybe your sleep is often interrupted and you just can't figure out why....
There's one thing that may be missing from your life and that is a regular daily detox practice. Now when I say detox I'm not talking fasting, diets, pills, or diuretics... I'm talking about natural easy things you can add to your day to help your body function at it's best! When your body is in top form your energy will be up, your skin will be clearer, your digestion will improve, as well as many other great side effects!
When you practice any cleansing activity, you are removing toxins and supporting your body's natural processes. Detoxing helps protect your body from illness and improves your ability to maintain good overall health. Your kidneys, liver, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin are all natural elimination channels for toxins within the body. Any detoxing activity helps to pull toxins from your cells to get them outta there via one or more of these channels! Therefore, when any part of your body’s elimination system isn't in top form, the toxins can't be filtered out properly and you can feel it in how your body works every single day. All this to say, elimination of toxins is vital to achieving optimum health. Adding what your body needs and taking away the toxins it doesn't is where it's at!
1. Begin each day with oil pulling.
This is ideally done on a completely empty stomach first thing. Put 1 Tbsp of organic oil (I prefer coconut oil) in your mouth and gently swish it between your teeth for up to 20 minutes. Spit this into the garbage, rinse your mouth, then brush your teeth as usual.
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice and has many benefits including cleaning your teeth and pulling toxins out of your body. Because of the type of membrane that lines your mouth and the fact that many toxins are attracted to oils & fats, this is an incredibly useful and easy way to support your body's natural cleansing.
Tip: Add 1 drop of dōTERRA peppermint essential oil to your mouth with the coconut oil to boost the fresh breath effect!
2. Have a large glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon before anything else!
This is a great way to kickstart your digestive system and rehydrate you after a long overnight period of not drinking any fluids.
Tip: Drink with a glass or stainless steel straw to help protect your teeth's enamel. Add fresh ginger for an immune boost or a pinch of cayenne for a metabolism boost.
3. Dry Skin Brushing.
This is a simple and effective way to increase your energy, improve circulation, reduce cellulite, make your skin glow, and improve the effectiveness of your lymphatic system. This means you'll look better, feel better, and your immune system will be boosted!
Once each day before a shower or bath, simply take a long handled bristle brush and brush the body all over in a particular pattern. Watch this video for more info!
4. Stay hydrated throughout the day.
An average adult needs a minimum of 2 liters of water each day. This can be more or less depending on your activity level, the climate, and other hydrating or dehydrating things you consume.
By making sure you get enough fluid throughout the day you'll keep all of your organs functioning optimally as well as flush all of the toxins out. Your energy will increase, bloating and digestive issues will decrease, and you will likely find that your head is clearer too!
Tip: To keep it interesting, add yummy things to your water! This may be cut up fruit like orange, lemon, kiwi, or watermelon. It could also be adding some fresh ginger, cucumber, or a drop or two of dōTERRA citrus essential oils!
5. Get enough fiber.
The western diet is typically lacking in fiber, and this is a big culprit in many digestive issues and illnesses. It leads to constipation, diarrhea, and bloating among many other issues. Making sure you get enough fiber either in your diet or by supplementing with ground flax or psyllium fiber will help keep things moving smoothly and have your gut working at it's best!
Tip: Stay away from that old school orange fiber supplement... you know the one! Read all about why it's best to stick to natural options here.
6. Move your body!
Each and every day get out there and move! Whether you like to hike, walk, do yoga, ride a bike, do gymnastics, or swim it doesn't matter how you do it, just do it! By getting your body moving you are helping your circulatory system, gastrointestinal system, and lymphatic system get moving and functioning at their best.
Tip: Try to break a sweat as often as possible! This will open up your skin's pores and help it secrete loads of toxins.

7. Eat more whole fruits and veggies.
We all know that fresh fruit and vegetables are good for us, but there are certain ones that are known to specifically help with detoxing the kidneys and liver and keeping them working at peak form.
When possible, include a few of these in your diet daily: parsley, coriander/cilantro, dandelion root, licorice root, cayenne, turmeric, garlic, lemon, lime, grapefruit, sea vegetables (such as nori & dulse), beetroot, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower & brussel sprouts), wheatgrass, and spirulina.
8. Get upside down...seriously!
Inverting has been proven to help the cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine and nervous systems work at their best. Even a couple of minutes each day can help.
Some ideas for easy inversions include: Legs propped up against a wall, downward dog, or even just a standing forward fold. If you're a bit more advanced then shoulder stand or handstand might be something to try. By getting your head below your heart you'll be helping your body's systems work at peak form and cleanse your body naturally.

9. Reduce your exposure to toxins.
It only makes sense that if you want to reduce the toxins within your body, keeping them out in the first place deserves some attention.
You are exposed to thousands of chemicals and toxins on a daily basis. They are in things like beauty products, makeup, air fresheners, cleaning products, and the pesticide sprayed on conventionally grown produce. So be mindful when you can to choose natural and organic products. Choose things with ingredients you can pronounce. Stay away from air fresheners and perfumes completely and freshen the air (and yourself) with non-toxic scents from essential oils. Make your own non-toxic cleaning products. It may seem overwhelming at first, but once you become aware of all of the horrible ingredients and chemicals you use in your daily routine, it'll be a no-brainer to begin making the switch!

10. Tongue scraping
This is another ancient Ayurvedic practice! This little goodie can make a big difference in your oral health, how you taste your food, and the amount of bacteria that make their way into your body! For more info on the many benefits of tongue scraping, check this out.
To do it, simply tun your tongue scraper from back to front for 7 to 14 strokes. The scraper should be rinsed between strokes if there is a lot of accumulation. Be gentle as to not aggravate the gag reflex during scraping or injure the surface of the tongue.
So that's it! By incorporating these 10 detox practices into your daily schedule you will be helping your body work at it's best and you'll feel great! Overwhelmed by the amount of things on this list? Start with one. Then when that becomes part of your regular routine, add another. Slowly build up until these are all just part of what you do!
